Custom Ruby Engagement

Custom Ruby Engagement

Did you know the Ruby (a variety of corundum) is one of the world's most valuable gemstones.

The color of a ruby is due to a trace of chromic oxide in the stone; the amount of this substance determines the depth of color as the corundum itself is clear.

Rubies are expected to have at least some inclusions since inclusion-free rubies are practically non-existent. Heat treatment is also standard for the jewelry industry.

Rubies that have a report that confirms there is no evidence of heat from an independent laboratory like GIA command a high premium due to their extreme rarity.

It was quite a delight when Rusty and Laura decided to use one for this custom engagement ring. A symbol that is as unique and awesome as that special person - custom is the way to go. I mean, by the time you have found that one person, why not give them a ring they will truly love that captures their personality and taste?

After a few rounds of preliminary drawings incorporating ruby shapes, we landed on a three stone design with a mix of added details like surface engraving (oxidized for contrast), flush set diamonds, and fine milgrain accents taking inspiration from gothic era jewelry, but still with a contemporary overall look.

The ring was hand carved from scratch from jewelers wax using precision carvers and rotary tools. It was then cast into 14 Karat white gold using the Lost Wax Casting Method. This process alone is an incredible thing, but a bit too lengthy to explain here. From that point, the surface of the metal ring was finished and perfected using a range of sandpapers.

We were able to source the perfect AAA grade natural Ruby of Tanzanian origin. It is so gorgeous and saturated with color.

Settings were cut to fit each stone and they were secured into place one by one. A millgrain wheel tool was used to apply a fine bead patterned edge and hallmarking stamps were applied. Finally the ring was polished on a buffing wheel giving it a high shine.
